Aston Villa look to raise funds to seal £30m Lutsharel Geertruida deal

Villa will need to make room in their squad for versatile Dutch defender with Diego Carlos one player they will look to move on

Aston Villa are looking to offload fringe players in order to complete a £30 million deal for Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida.
Netherlands international Geertruida is Unai Emery’s No.1 target this week as he attempts to recruit a new right-back, following an injury to Matty Cash.
Geertruida can also play in a number of other defensive positions and Villa have held discussions over a potential deal with the Eredivisie club.
However, Villa will have to make room in their squad and raise funds to advance their bid to sign the 24-year-old, with Diego Carlos one player the club would look to move on.
Villa have agreed a deal with Valencia for Enzo Barrenechea to join on loan, with Samuel Iling-Junior completing a move to Serie A club Bologna earlier this week.
Carlos is facing an uncertain future under Emery and Villa are hoping to find him a new club before Friday’s transfer deadline. Midfielder Leander Dendoncker is also set to depart either on loan or permanently.
Cash, the Poland international, is facing around a month out with a hamstring injury after sustaining the problem in Villa’s home defeat by Arsenal last Saturday.
Villa have only teenager Kosta Nedeljkovic as a recognised right-back in Cash’s absence.
Geertruida is highly rated by Villa after becoming a regular in the Feyenoord team, performing brilliantly under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot last season.
After the defeat by Arsenal, Emery admitted that the club are hoping to make another addition before the weekend.
“We are trying to be demanding how we can improve the squad, how we can improve some circumstances,” he said.
“Maybe we will need time to be stronger and this week we are going to analyse if there’s something we can add.”
